about this website
Smech was created due to a passion for designing, concepting, and constructing pieces by hand.
about the artist
My love for making things by hand started when I was very young. At age 3 I was holding a thread and needle for the first time. My grandmother was sewing something and I also wanted to do it. Surprisingly, she allowed me to. After threading a needle for me and having given a fair warning that I could poke my fingers, I started sewing. Adding stitch work to my favorite blanket, it became my first art project. Throughout my childhood I liked to make many things; from folding and cutting things with paper, carve soap, drawing and collect lots of materials that I imagine to be useful. I took sewing classes throughout my 9th and 10th grade, and drawing classes during my senior year.
I now hold a B.F.A in Graphic Design and a M.F.A. in Advertising. Throughout my college years I've always wanted to start a business where I can design and produce my own products. For many years I've thought and talked about it, and finally, I stopped talking and just let my hands get busy.
about the products
All items are created with a purpose in mind for the everyday lifestyle. The products are not about a special occasion or trend. The products are to please our many little daily tasks.
I wish to design pieces that are useful and aesthetically pleasing without using any industrial machinery or mass production. The main materials that I use are acid-free book boards, art papers, fabrics, and other materials that have the potential to be cut and constructed by hand.
I always believe that every problem has a solution. When trying to accomplish a design, I've applied this thinking, along with many trials and errors.
There is a production limit per design, usually around 250 pieces. If the materials that I used become unavailable, the item will be discontinued or made with different materials without losing the original design intention. Most products would be made to order with a few pieces in stock.
about the future
I am starting off with smaller home accessories such as jewelry displays, trash cans, lamps, etc using bookarts materials and techniques. Currently studying towards a certificate in Fashion Design, I see myself designing artful tops, belts, bags, etc. Later down the road, my goal is to be able to design mini furniture. I will eventually use more types of art forms such as ceramic, silk screen printing; which ever techniques that will allow me to hand produce my designs in a studio.
